Duke Nukem Forever 2013 - A DN3D Mod
Duke Nukem Forever is a scrappy, mongrel of a game that, in many ways, should have been put down a few years ago. With its dated graphics, horrifically unfunny controls and painfully protracted loading times, it's a game that belongs to a time before Half-Life 2, Call of Duty and Halo transformed the FPS.
However, a group of modders have managed to re-imagine Duke Nukem Forever as a DN3D mod. If you were disappointed by DNF, or are simply curious to see how it might have been, this is a very welcome development that could be worth checking out.
The game aims to recreate the 2001 E3 trailer that first suggested what Duke Nukem Forever would be like. The result is a game that looks and feels a lot like DN3D, but with plenty of references to the original and, as with DN3D, lots of speed.
It's a bit of an odd choice to go for the classic DN3D template, but there are some interesting ideas and a few nice reskinned weapons that make it worth playing. The game also has a good variety of new enemies and even a couple of minigames.
There's a bit of an odd late-90s vibe to the game too, with its flat architecture and ropey textures. It also has a weirdly low-quality physics engine that often makes it hard to tell when you're in the right position and even the enemy AI isn't quite as good as it should be. But, overall, this is a fun and compulsive game that fans of Duke Nukem will enjoy and, in all honesty, is almost a historical necessity if you're a die-hard fan.
